Alternative Environments

Fall Landscaping Tips

As the holidays approach there are a few exterior items that need to be considered before we are lost in a whirlwind of Christmas lights and shopping sprees. Alternative Environments will be happy to take care of these items. Let us help you put "your best image forward".

Late Fall Fungicide

"Take All" and "Large Patch" fungus can survive the winter in your lawn and show its ugly effects when lawn greening starts in the spring. These two fungi will present as irregularly shaped dead spots.

If you had Dollar Spot fungus this past summer it is highly recommended that you get a late fall or early winter fungicide treatment. In this case the old adage "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is very true. Seasonal Landscaping

Now that most of the leaves have fallen off of the trees it is a good time to start cutting back perennials (Monkey Grasses, Day Lilies, & ground covers) in preparation for the holiday season mulching.

Late November is also a good time to plant balled and burlaped trees. These trees will have been recently dug and by planting them now they will have time to get established prior to next years growing season. Perhaps a tree would make a good gift for that "green-minded" person who has everything!

Fertilizing

The perfect time to apply the fortifying fertilizer is just after aerating. Fertilizing allows your lawn to store the needed nutrients to stay healthy through the long dormant winter period. Time your spreading a month before the first frost is predicted.
The best application is a weed and feed type product. Look for a fall feeder that is high in potassium and phosphorus. Read the package instructions to apply correctly.
The fall is also a good time to apply lime to the lawn. This will reduce built up acidity in the soil. The proper Ph Level (acidity level) will help the roots absorb the fertilizer. You will need approximately 40 pounds of limestone per 1,000 square feet of yard.

Grub Control

Grub control is important because adult beetles lay their eggs in the yard in July and August. If not controlled, their maturing larva (grubs) will do damage all winter, though it won't be exposed until the spring. Early August through the first weeks in September is the best time to apply pesticides. If you have outdoor pets, look for a product like Merit or Mach 2. If you don't have pets that can be harmed by poisons, then try Dylox.
All grub products need a thorough watering to activate.
